Working with Faith Ivey introduced me to a side of dog training that I had never truly considered before. Before this shoot, I imagined dog training as simply teaching commands, but spending time with Faith revealed just how much observation, patience and communication happens behind every interaction.
Rather than photographing staged demonstrations, I wanted to document the genuine relationship between trainer and dog. Every movement, reward and pause carried intention, showing that successful training relies on understanding behaviour just as much as teaching it. Capturing these quieter moments became just as important as photographing the more energetic aspects of the session.
As part of Made By Hand: An Insight Into The Hidden Paths Across Our Palms, this series explores another form of invisible labour. Dog training is often judged by the final result, a well-behaved dog, without recognising the hours of knowledge, consistency and trust required to get there. Through these photographs, I wanted to celebrate the dedication behind that process and highlight the connection built between trainer and dog long before anyone else sees the outcome.
