The Beckford Collective

Throughout Made By Hand, I discovered that craftsmanship is rarely experienced in isolation. The Beckford Collective brought together this idea beautifully by creating a shared space where independent artists and makers can exhibit, collaborate and support one another.
During my visit, I photographed a range of creatives working across different disciplines, from upcycled jewellery and mixed-media artwork to macramé and handmade crystal jewellery. Although every maker had their own style and creative process, they all shared the same dedication to creating by hand and preserving traditional craftsmanship within a contemporary setting.
Rather than documenting only the finished products, I wanted to focus on the people behind them. By photographing each maker within their creative environment, I was able to reveal the skill, patience and individuality hidden behind every piece. The collective itself became a reminder that invisible labour is not only found in individual professions, but also within creative communities that encourage artists to grow together.
As part of Made By Hand: An Insight Into The Hidden Paths Across Our Palms, this series celebrates both the makers and the space that allows their work to flourish, highlighting the importance of community in sustaining handmade craft.
